Maryiah Elizabeth Fulsom Participates in State DECA Competition

2013 Mar 13

Ten students will represent William Woods University at the International Collegiate DECA competition in Anaheim, Calif., in April, after winning first or second at the recent state competition.

WWU students entered nine events at the 2013 Collegiate DECA State Competition at the Lake of the Ozarks, receiving first place in four events and second place in five. Of the 170 students at the competition, 19 were from William Woods, including Maryiah Elizabeth Fulsom, a junior busniess administration major from Mexico, Mo.

A student-driven organization, Collegiate DECA values leadership, innovation, integrity and teamwork. It prepares students for careers by integrating skills learned in the classroom into real-world experiences.

Although all of the competition events relate to business, students have a wide array of events to choose from-all of which provide an opportunity for them to gain experience and network.

"I am really proud of each of the students that traveled to compete, regardless of whether students placed," Linda Duke, WWU assistant professor of marketing and business and the DECA adviser, said. "It takes extra effort and work to participate in this competition."

First-place winners were:

• Lacee Floyd of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; Naomi Starr of Columbia, Mo.; and Olivia Koselansky of Sterling Heights, Mich., in Entrepreneurship

• Katie Gannon of St. Louis, Mo., in Web Design

• Andy Davis of Rochdale, England, in Professional Sales

• Andrea Hutchinson of Council Bluffs, Iowa, in Restaurant and Food Service Management

• Tara Seboldt of Fults, Ill., in Travel and Tourism

Second-place winners were:

• Tricia Jackson of Valley Park, Mo., and Seboldt in Business Ethics

• JP Parra of San Paulo, Brazil, and Matt Steiniger of O'Fallon, Mo., in Entrepreneurship

• Steiniger in Banking, Financial Services

• Koselansky in Retail Management

Others students who placed were:

Maryiah Elizabeth Fulsom of Mexico, Mo., third place in Professional Sales

• Kacey Radcliff of St. Charles, Mo., third place in Entrepreneurship

• Starr, fifth place in Banking, Financial Services

• Joe Parenteau of Regina, Saskatchewan, fifth place in Corporate Finance

"Our WWU students continue to demonstrate their top-quality abilities, including the equivalent education that they receive from WWU," Duke said.

Students do not need to be a business major or minor to compete in Collegiate DECA, and any student can join since there are a variety of competition areas.
