Shelby Jobe Selected as Freshman Advantage Mentor at William Woods University

2011 Jun 23

William Woods University is again offering a three-week summer program, called Freshman Advantage, for students who want to get a jump-start on college. The program, which started June 12, runs until July 2 on the WWU campus.

This year 11 mentors are assisting the participants by tutoring, leading weekend activities and serving as community advisors in the residence halls. The mentors are selected by Freshman Advantage faculty through an application and interview process. Shelby Jobe of Russellville, Mo., is one of the mentors.

Freshman Advantage is open to first-time college freshmen. It is designed to aid students in the transition from high school to college. The program, which is in its seventh year, is directed and taught by WWU faculty members.

Through the program, students will earn seven common studies credit hours in courses such as math, college writing, art, film studies, speech and psychology.

Earning credit hours during the summer is helpful for those students focused on academics, who want to double major, who want to graduate early or those who simply want an introduction to college course work.

William Wallace of Louisiana, Mo., participated in Freshman Advantage when he was an incoming student and called it a rewarding experience.

"I got an awesome head start on my college credits, and I was able to get an early grasp on what college courses were like. I was also able to make friends with 60 other freshmen and learned about life at William Woods from my mentors. I would recommend Freshman Advantage to every incoming student."

In addition to classes, Freshman Advantage participants will have the opportunity to enjoy activities such as movie nights, barbeques and weekend trips to Six Flags.

Selected to be mentors this summer are:

• Amy Burnett of Scottsdale, Ariz.

• Marcelo Carreiro of Curitiba, Brazil

• Alicia Delaney of St. Peters, Mo.

• Elise Fumagalli of Washington, Mo.

• Alexis Guth of Sullivan, Mo.
